BANK AND EXCHANGE RATES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The average rates offered on Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) private deposits remained unchanged in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>December 2011.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Interbank rates fell 4\u20137 basis points across maturities in 2011 as banks remained awash\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with liquidity. The one-, three-, six- and 12-month rates averaged 0.82%, 1.05%, 1.3% and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>1.54% respectively.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through 2011, he Kuwaiti dinar, tied to a basket of currencies dominated by the US dollar\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(USD), appreciated by 1% versus the US dollar. The dinar averaged USD 3.62 over the year,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>versus USD 3.49 in 2010. The dinar\u2019s appreciation against the euro was larger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CONSUMER SECTOR<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The economic performance of the country remains mixed, with large trade and fiscal\u00a0<\/span><\/span>surpluses on the back of high oil prices set against sluggish growth in the non-oil economy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Non-oil growth is likely to be steady at 4%, a rate below the regional average. The economy\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is being held back by structural flaws and a slow execution pace in government investment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and projects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The consumer sector is the main bright spot, with government sectors also providing core\u00a0<\/span><\/span>support for the non-oil economy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Employment was up 3% in 2011 (70% of which was in the private sector). Government\u00a0<\/span><\/span>wages and salaries spending rose 22% in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2011\/12.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Recent public sector strikes met with generous pay increments of up to 25%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

OIL AND NATURAL GAS SECTOR<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oil and natural gas represent the two main natural resources of the country and the main\u00a0<\/span><\/span>source of its income. As such, they have been a top priority for development projects\u00a0<\/span><\/span>implemented by the government which maintains a balance between production level and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>rationalisation of consumption.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the onset of oil exportation, a new era for the country\u2019s economy began, in which the oil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sector played an increasingly important role. This enabled the creation of the modern State\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of Kuwait .The tables below show the latest available statistics on oil and natural gas\u00a0<\/span><\/span>production, refined products, exports by regional groups of importing countries and locally\u00a0<\/span><\/span>consumed oil products. These statistics should be of great benefit for researchers in this\u00a0<\/span><\/span>important field.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

COMPANIES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the following three forms of entity, the shareholder’s liability is limited to his\/her\u00a0<\/span><\/span>capital.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SHAREHOLDING COMPANY (KSC)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Every shareholding company incorporated in Kuwait shall be of Kuwait nationality and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>members shall be Kuwaitis. Its registered office shall be in Kuwait.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CLOSED SHAREHOLDING COMPANY (KSC \u2013 CLOSED)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kuwaiti company law permits the establishment of a closed shareholding company.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Notwithstanding the foregoing provisions, a shareholding company other than a company\u00a0<\/span><\/span>holding a concession or a monopoly, the shares of which are not to be offered to the public\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for subscription, may exceptionally be formed without the issue of a decree by an official\u00a0<\/span><\/span>instrument in writing signed by all of the (intending) founders, who shall be not less than\u00a0<\/span><\/span>five in number.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The capital of a closed company must not be less than KWD 7,500. However, in practice, it\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is unlikely that a company would be registered by the Ministry unless it was adequately\u00a0<\/span><\/span>capitalised.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY (WLL)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Limited liability companies, known locally as WLLs (with limited liability), may also be\u00a0<\/span><\/span>formed. By law, participation in a joint stock (shareholding) company is restricted.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
