10 CV mistakes to avoid<\/h2>\n

Take a moment to read our guide to common \u2013 and easy \u2013\u00a0application mistakes that can make the difference between getting a job interview and having your CV put straight on the \u2018no\u2019 pile…<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Mr Mark? Oh, sorry, Mr Marrey\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

It may seem obvious but make sure that you have spelt the name of the person you\u2019re sending the application to correctly \u2013 on the email and on your cover letter\u2026 and that you have their title correct. Mr Mark doesn\u2019t want to be called Mr Marrey, after all. Then, just to be on the safe side, double-check the company and product names that your spellchecker wouldn\u2019t have caught.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Check it<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking of which, spell check. Spell check right now!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. Right application, wrong company<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re sending out lots of applications at once double and triple check that the right CV is going to the right job. Every CV should be different \u2013 slightly tweaked to make sure it fits each job advert. If you send the wrong CV to the wrong job then you can really harm your chances\u2026
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. Get attached<\/strong><\/p>\n

Attach your attachments! It does not look good if two minutes after you press send you email them again with a bashful ‘and this time with attachments’. This is especially true if you\u2019ve listed attention to detail as one of your attributes.<\/p>\n

And then don’t make these other\u00a0email mistakes!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. Ready, set, format!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make sure the format of your CV is easy to open for all computers \u2013 or at least most of them. There are so many different versions of Word now that some machines can\u2019t access the files attached \u2013 it\u2019s best to save your CV as a standard .doc file that any computer can open. Also, be careful with too much formatting \u2013 if it\u2019s a\u00a0highly designed CV for a creative role then a PDF file is a safer option.<\/p>\n

6. Judge a book by its title<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your CV should have your name, in bold and clearly laid out, at the top of the document. You don\u2019t need to write ‘CV’ at the top or even ‘Curriculum Vitae’ (shudder). You want them to remember your name!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

7. Think about it<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make sure the email you\u2019re sending the application from isn\u2019t a cutesy personal email address.\u00a0Beerlover69@hotmail.com<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t likely to be taken seriously. This is also true of the email address you have added to your CV as a point of contact.<\/p>\n

8. Once more for luck…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spell check again!<\/p>\n

9. …But remember<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spell checkers aren’t infallible. Go through it yourself and look for grammatical errors; if you\u2019re not confident in editing your own work then get a friend or family member to go over it for you. You can always bribe them with a cup of tea and a biscuit. Lucky them.<\/p>\n

10. And, finally<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, take a breath. Have one more read through \u2013 yes, AGAIN! \u2013 and if you\u2019re sure everything is 100% correct press send…<\/p>\n
