You want to target the right person, with the right message at the right time across every channel. \u00a0And you want to do all of those things at scale \u2013 you want to be able to grow without sacrificing that personalized approach.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why, as you contact your database, it\u2019s essential that you divide that database into segments, and tailor your communications for each segment \u2013 as we\u2019ve learned,\u00a0<strong>23% of engagement is explained by segmentation<\/strong>. But to create meaningful segments, you need a platform that can divide your audience in meaningful ways<\/p>\n<p><strong>How Should I Segment My Database?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, marketers have used\u00a0<strong>marketing automation<\/strong>\u00a0to segment their databases using demographic and firmographic criteria. For example, you might create segments based on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Job title<\/li>\n<li>Company size<\/li>\n<li>Industry<\/li>\n<li>Language<\/li>\n<li>Geographic location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More sophisticated marketing automation solutions can also segment your audience by behaviors \u2013 not just who your customers are, but what they\u00a0<em>do<\/em>. These might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visits to your website<\/li>\n<li>Interactions with your email messages<\/li>\n<li>Engagement on social network<\/li>\n<li>Attendance\/engagement at in-person events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When it comes to\u00a0<em>which<\/em>\u00a0behaviors you can use to segment, however, different solutions will differ widely. On the basic end, simpler solutions can segment by behaviors like \u201cclicking on an email\u201d or \u201cfilling out a form.\u201d But on the more advanced end, some solutions can segment based on cross-channel behaviors \u2013 on your website, in your emails, on social, or in person.<\/p>\n<p>Which of these ways do you want to segment your audience?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By firmographics (job title, company size, industry, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>By simple behaviors (such as \u201cclicking on an email\u201d or \u201cfilling out a form\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>By cross-channel behaviors (such as \u201cvisiting a tradeshow booth\u201d or \u201csharing content on Facebook\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But what does this kind of segmentation actually look like? To give you a better idea, here are some examples of segments you might want to target. Keep in mind \u2013 these are just sample segments, to give you an idea of the possibilities you can explore with marketing automation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buyers from a specific industry who have visited your company website in the last 60 days<\/li>\n<li>Buyers who have shared your content on social networks in the last two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Buyers at companies with less than 1,000 employees, who have clicked a specific link in an email in the past two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Buyers who have participated in a social poll in the past 30 days<\/li>\n<li>Buyers who have visited your company\u2019s knowledge base more than three times in the last week<\/li>\n<li>Buyers who have visited your company\u2019s booth at a tradeshow in the last 90 days<\/li>\n<li>Buyers who have visited your company\u2019s pricing page on your corporate website two times in one day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course (as we\u2019ve already said), the range of segmentation capabilities varies\u00a0<em>drastically<\/em>\u00a0from one marketing automation platform to another.
