{"id":11122,"date":"2021-12-03T16:18:04","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T16:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/managersoffice.net\/?p=11122"},"modified":"2021-12-03T16:18:05","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T16:18:05","slug":"thermoregulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/managersoffice.net\/el\/thermoregulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Thermoregulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Retaining and losing heat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>In bears, the basal metabolic rate varies with climate and season<ul><li>Polar Bear has the highest<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Overheat easily when running; can&#8217;t travel any great distance at speeds more than a walk.<ul><li>Low surface-area to volume ratio favors heat retention.<\/li><li>Tendency to overheat enhanced by thick layer of fat<\/li><li>Thin adults and young cubs up to 6 months old, with little body fat,&nbsp;<em>are&nbsp;<\/em>susceptible to cold.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Use more than twice the predicted energy for moving at a given speed, perhaps due to bulky body.<\/li><li>Fat and fur both insulate.<\/li><li>As long as bear isn&#8217;t exposed to wind, body temperature and metabolic rate remain normal at -37 degrees C (-35 degrees F).<\/li><li>Body temperature drops to 31-35 degrees C (88-95 degrees) when in winter dens; this temperature is only slightly below normal body temperature.
